People always ask me what color stain do I put on my kitchen cabinets, what style counter top, or even what stove do I put in my kitchen to give it the “look.” Well, let me give you the bad news first, none of them will do it. Kitchen design is about a lot more than the items in your kitchen. It is about lighting and fashion. We are not only talking about the lighting over the counter-tops, but the lighting was coming in from the window and the view out your window. This is what most people consider to be the easiest detail of the room, and an often overlooked one, It is unfortunate as it can make a world of difference in the kitchen.
Just like every other element in the kitchen design, the window treatment is important. The goal is to have good form, function, contrast, color, and pattern/texture. Let 's look at this one by one.
FORM: We can keep this simple. Is it long or short? Thick or thin? Soft and shapely or crisply tailored? Formal or informal? Why do you have it in your kitchen? What do you want it to say? These are all questions we need to ask when looking at Kitchen Window treatments. Your window treatment is one of the bright areas that everyone will look to when he or she walks in your kitchen.
FUNCTION: Of course, we need this item to work and do a job. We cannot sacrifice something pretty that has no function. Sometimes the beauty in something is how it works. To do this, we need to consider the view, manipulation of sunlight, privacy, the fabric lined for warmth, and interference/proximity to functional areas in the kitchen surrounding the window treatment. Do we want the sun to shine in or do we need some shade?
CONTRAST: This is part of a design that is hard to make fit into the room. To do this, you need to decide what you are looking for. Crazy colors or peace, serenity. Why do you want either of these?
COLORS: Colors can create feelings. Color can bring thins together and be a key, the focus, the perfect connecting piece that pulls the kitchen together. Never forget that color is feeling. Colors can be bold, cheerful, monochromatic, complementary, dull, warm, cool and just plain too much.
PATTERN/TEXTURE: This is a fun section ad things can be plain, or your window can look like a Scottish kilt. Things to consider in your layers are flooring, back-splash, accessories, the wood grain of your cabinetry and your decoration. Everything needs to work together to make this be amazing. Look at the weight, balance, and proportion of your textures and patterns.
Don’t make it a complicated task to pick these window treatments out! Have fun with it and go with your gut feeling. You are the person that needs to like it and look at it every day. Keep in mind the items we discussed above, and put them all together in your mind when you pick out the perfect window treatment!
