Having an outdoor deck or patio won't make your home look more prominent on paper because it doesn't technically contribute to the overall square footage of your home. However, in reality, outdoor decks and patios can create an expansive entertainment and recreational area for your home that you'll enjoy for years to come.
Outdoor decks and patios make excellent places to entertain family and friends or have a quiet place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world. They can be enclosed with windows, screens, vines, or plants too, creating a general private outdoor room space addition on your home.
Many people like to create specific decorating styles and themes for their outdoor living space, just as they do for the inside rooms too. Which theme and decorating style you choose for your patio or deck though, should depend a lot on how you plan to use the space on a day to day basis.
If for instance, you'd like to create a beautiful outdoor entertainment area for having parties or get-togethers with family and friends, you might want to try decorating your outdoor deck or patio in a barbecue or outdoor kitchen design style.
Barbecue areas aren't just limited to plain old-fashioned charcoal or gas grills these days either. You can put in a beautiful outdoor fireplace for instance, or a barbecue pit instead. Alternatively, there are a wide variety of outdoor kitchen appliances that can indeed turn the deck or patio into a sophisticated living area for your home.
If you're creating the area primarily for barbecues, you might want to think about designing with a western, country, or rustic decorating style too. Try patio and deck furniture made out of rough-hewn logs for instance, or create a little gingham checked country kind of look instead. If you're going with the upscale outdoor kitchen equipment though, an excellent decorating theme to go with that would be a French bistro look.
Nautical and beach theme decorating is also an excellent and fun choice for outdoor patio and deck areas. You could decorate with colorful beach chairs and umbrellas, hang ropes, anchors, or floating devices from the deck railing, and maybe even create a sandbox full of beach toys for the kids too.
The decorating theme you decide to use for your outdoor deck or patio area will most likely evolve with time, but there are some essential basics you should try to start. If you have room in the new outdoor space, try to get a beautiful table and chair set with an umbrella. You could go with a regular old-fashioned picnic table if you'd like even, and mount an umbrella on that or plant one in the ground close by.
Depending on the way you'll use your space, and how much room you have, you might also want to consider putting in a beautiful garden bench or swing, or some comfortable Adirondack chairs too. Even if you're only able to do a little bit of redecorating at a time using items you already have randomly around your house, getting started with a new deck or outdoor patio decorating theme is easy and fun!
